Today we tackle a favorite subject of everyone’s: haters. At some point in your life you’ve had a great idea or a lot of passion steaming behind something and there’s been someone there to talk you down. To tell you no. To tell you that you can’t do it.
A lot of times those people have poor reasoning - things like, “because it’s dumb” or “you could never do something that big.”
Entrepreneurship is all about proving those people wrong. Think about how many stories you’ve heard about a student who takes his idea to a professor who gives him a C and says, “That’ll never work.” You’re usually reading that story after the idea has proven itself and the student, now a little older, is successful.
There are 6.7 billion people on Earth right now. Someone’s gonna hate.
I heard Eric Marcoullier say that entrepreneurs are the ultimate optimists, even when we shouldn’t be. More often than not, I’ve believed that the best would workout, no matter the situation. I’m not sure why I’ve always had such an optimistic mindset but it really helps in the startup life.
Do This Exercise
Think about one big success or a string of successes. Think about the past year and all of the good things that have come out of that year. Write it all down and post it somewhere that you’ll see everyday.
Don’t mention the bad. Don’t attach a “but” to any of your wins. Let the wins be wins.
The reminder of all the good you’ve done is a powerful tool for beating back the bad. We all get discouraged at times, it’s human nature.
Stay optimistic. Know that your idea, your passion, is going to work.
